World Conference

Conference packing list

11 March 2008

With the World Conference fast approaching, here are some things that you need to remember to bring to the event. We have listed them below for you:

Clothing, food but no gifts:

  • Gifts for the hostess country. Although it is the custom of Member Organizations to bring gifts for the hostess country – this year hostess, GGASA, has requested that, in accordance with South African customs, you bring money. It will be pinned onto costumed service team Guides during the closing dinner.
  • Warm clothing. It is difficult to predict what the weather will be like during our time in Johannesburg, but it will be winter in South Africa, so you should come prepared with plenty of warm clothing.
  • Uniform. It should be worn for the programme during the day. It is not required during the evenings, apart from the Welcoming Ceremony on Monday evening. On Thursday evening, International Night, you are encouraged to wear national dress.
  • Pre-packed food. Don’t forget the pre-packed food from your country for the dinner and International Night celebration.
  • Items from your country. Bring items from your country for the World Market. Have a look at the World Conference programme and agenda for more details.
  • ‘WAGGGS’ money. The World Market will use ‘WAGGGS’ money’, which will have a fixed exchange rate with the following currencies: US dollars, South African Rand, Euros and British Pounds.

Others:

  • Apply for visas. Please ensure that you apply for visas in plenty of time if required. Specific invitations can be sent from South Africa to enable you to apply for your visa, so please allow enough time for this part of the process.
  • Electrical plugs. South Africa often uses three pin round plugs, but increasingly, the three pin square plugs and sockets are available, including in the hotel.
